In the virtual silver medal game of the women's basketball 5x5 competition, played on Monday, May 15 at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Gilas Pilipinas Women defeated Malaysia 77-63.


With 24 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, including 5-of-11 from beyond the arc, along with 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals in 21 minutes of action, veteran Janine Pontejos led Gilas in scoring. Khate Castillo scored 18 points (7/17 FG, 4/11 3PT) in a strong performance, and Camille Clarin chipped in with 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 Assists.


In the seven-team single round-robin competition, the Philippines came in second with a 5-1 record, and Malaysia took home the bronze (4-2). Indonesia defeated the defending champion Philippines 6-0 to win the gold medal. Indonesia was headed by two naturalized players, Kim Pierre-Louis and Peyton Alexis Whitted in 32nd Southeast Asian Games 5x5 Women’s Basketball.


The members of the Gilas Women 12 under the guidance of Patrick Aquino are Jack Danielle Animam, Afril Bernardino, Janine Pontejos, Clare Castro, Angel Surada, France Mae Cabinbin, Khate Castillo, Camille Clarin, Katrina Guytingco, Ella Fajardo, Stefanie Berberabe, and Camille Clarin.


The 2023 FIBA Women's Asia Cup will be held in Sydney Olympic Park Sports Hall, Sydney, Australia, from June 26 to July 2, and Gilas Women will be back in action during that time. Group B includes China Taipei (World #33, Asia #6), Australia (World #3, Asia #2), Japan (World #9, Asia #3), and the Philippines (World #42, Asia #7).
