At the 32nd Southeast Asian Games, Gilas Pilipinas reclaimed the men's 5x5 basketball championship.
On May 16 at the Morodok Techno National Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the Gilas Pilipinas Men team reclaimed the gold medal in the Men's Basketball 5x5 competition at the 2023 SEA Games by defeating the Cambodian squad, which included some naturalized players, by a score of 80-69.
Justin Brownlee, a naturalized Filipino, led the Gilas team with 23 points on 8 of 16 field goal attempts, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and a flawless 4-of-4 in the charity stripe. In 35 minutes of play, he also had 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block.
Marcio Lassiter contributed 10 points (4/7fg, 2/3 3pts), 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals in addition to Chris Newsome's impressive 16 points (7-of-12 FG), 2 rebounds, and 4 assists.
In the losing effort, Darrin Dorsey finished with 17 points (4/14fg, 3/10fg, 6/6ft), 2 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Brandon Peterson led Cambodia's seven-man rotation with a double-double of 18 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal and Sayeed Pridgett both contributed 13 points.
The Chot Reyes-coached Gilas made 9 out of 15 free throws (CAM - 13/18ft), and they shot 32 out of 67 from the field, including 7 of 21 from beyond the arc (CAM - 26/62FG, 4/19 3pts). 12 turnovers were made by both teams. Gilas had more assists (14-13) and 40 more boards than Cambodia.
"Win or lose, this was my final stint coaching at the Southeast Asian Games; I vowed to never do so again. Chot Reyes stated, "At least I was able to leave with a gold medal.
For the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas will be back in action from August 25 to September 10. The Philippines (World No. 40, Asia No. 8) and Angola are also in Group A includes Italy (World #10, Europe #7), Angola (World #41, Africa #4), the Dominican Republic (World #23, Americas #7), and (World #40, Asia #8).
