Game Report

Jalen Brunson didn't need to discuss his playing time or scoring targets with his coach in the face of the Knicks' must-win situation.

According to Brunson, "Nothing was said at all. Whatever it takes."

And it took a superhuman effort from Brunson, who scored 38 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished out seven assists in a 48-minute season-saving performance as the Knicks beat the Miami Heat 112-103 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Wednesday night.

The win prevented the Heat from becoming just the second No. 8 seed to reach the conference finals and forced the series back to Miami for Game 6 on Friday night.

RJ Barrett contributed 26 points, and despite Julius Randle getting hit by Bam Adebayo in the first quarter and having a swollen face, he still managed to score 24 points for the fifth-seeded Knicks. The Knicks kept their hopes alive of reaching the conference finals for the first time since 2000, just like they did by defeating the Heat in seven games in the second round.

The Knicks led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter, but the Heat finally found their rhythm from behind the arc and cut the deficit to just two points with 2 1/2 minutes left.

As Barrett said, "You've got to kind of scratch and claw and do whatever you can to win the game."

Jimmy Butler, who scored 42 points in the Heat's Game 5 victory over Milwaukee in the first round, had only 19 points on Wednesday. Bam Adebayo added 18 points, and Duncan Robinson had 17 points.

Despite the loss, Butler was philosophical: "It doesn't matter if I score 40 or 50 or 19 or nine, we always have enough to win. And if I score 10 points in that game and we win, that wouldn't be an issue, wouldn't be a question, and I will continue to play the right way."

The 1999 Knicks are still the only No. 8 seed to reach a conference final in the current playoff format that began in 1984. They advanced all the way to the NBA Finals after upsetting the top-seeded Heat in the first round.

The Knicks began the second quarter on a blistering 18-2 run and followed it up with a 23-7 surge in the third quarter, which gave them a 73-54 lead midway through the third quarter. The Heat rallied but could only get as close as two points before Isaiah Hartenstein slammed home a follow dunk to start the Knicks' finishing kick.

Quentin Grimes also played all 48 minutes for the Knicks, finishing with eight points. Coach Tom Thibodeau wouldn't rule out playing both his starting guards for the entire game in Game 6 in Miami.

"We'll see what Game 6 brings," he said. "If it requires them to do that, then I'm not afraid to do it."

After dominating Game 3 and outworking the Knicks in the fourth quarter to win Game 4, the Heat missed 21 of their first 25 three-point attempts and found themselves down by 13 points with 9 1/2 minutes left. They mounted a comeback, but the Knicks held on to force Game 6. The Heat had previously knocked off Milwaukee, which had the league's best record.
