Northport VS Tropang Giga Prediction
Against an undermanned Tropang Giga, Batang Pier aims for a breakthrough victory.
NorthPort should be close to figuring out the PBA Odds On Tour now that it has played two games, especially because it will be facing a TNT team that will be without several of its key players on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Following their pivotal contributions in the Katropa's Governors' Cup championship run in April, players including Jayson Castro, Mikey Williams, Calvin Oftana, Roger Pogoy, and Kelly Williams have been given more rest by the team.
Even though the latter has been in charge of TNT's sessions since the squad began workouts two weeks ago, coach Jojo Lastimosa would temporarily hand the reigns to assistant Sandy Arespacochaga.
The Katropa have recruited Clifford Jopia, Damie Cuntapay, Peter Alfaro, and JV Gallego, all of whom were previously with San Beda and are all vying for inclusion in the next PBA Rookie Draft, to help cover some of their open player positions.
Poy Erram, Justin Chua, Kib Montalbo, Glenn Khobuntin, and Paul Varilla are among those lined up, but TNT intends to focus on figuring out how their new hires will fit in.
Whatever the size of the gap, NorthPort might need it to finally get into the victory column in the preseason.
The Batang Pier, who had some draft possibilities of their own, struggled for the most part in their first game and lost to Meralco 89-97 the following week before once more struggling to find their footing in a 75-87 defeat to San Miguel Beer the following Saturday.
Despite those defeats, NorthPort head coach Bonnie Tan is still optimistic that her team would eventually find its groove and create chemistry.
After the SMB game, Tan stated, "We're still a work in progress; struggles will continue to be present."
However, I saw that as they played more, their roles became more clearly defined and more obvious.
One of NorthPort's few shining lights, Justin Calma, averages 14.5 points and 12 rebounds per game. Mar Jesper Ayaay (13.5 ppg) and Paul Zamar (team-leading 16 ppg) have both shown consistency.
Tan also hopes that Joshua Munzon will find his rhythm soon, as the former Terrafirma No. 1 overall choice has struggled to find his rhythm so far, averaging only 2.5 points per game after going scoreless against SMB. (NC)
