Game Reports
Late in the third quarter, PBA Recap Highlights - PBA Governor's Cup 2023 import Justin Brownlee, a six-time Barangay Ginebra champion, entered the dugout ahead of the others while wearing a towel over his head.
The PBA Governors' Cup was still up for grabs when the game was ended, but the TNT Tropang Giga marched to the showers triumphant.
In front of more than 10,000 spectators at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the Tropang Giga took advantage of Brownlee's early withdrawal by winning 104-95 to take a crucial 3-2 lead in the race to four games.
After Brownlee left, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and his teammates kept their foot on the gas and didn't let the chance pass them by. As a result, they were able to secure the critical victory with an 8-0 final punch.
With a triple-double of 32 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists from Hollis-Jefferson, 20 points from Calvin Oftana, four 3-pointers, and eight boards, and four other TNT players scoring in double figures, the Tropa ended the series' back-and-forth pattern.
Coach Jojo Lastimosa and the TNT crew have took control of the series with back-to-back victories, giving them a chance to win it in Game 6 on Friday or, if necessary, Game 7 on Sunday.
However, Lastimosa anticipates a difficult battle on Friday since he thinks Brownlee will be back in the game. Of "Kabayan JB," Lastimosa remarked, "He's a warrior."
In just a little more than 25 minutes of action in Game 5, Brownlee scored 14 goals on 6-of-11 field shooting.
Brownlee teamed up with Christian Standhardinger, Nards Pinto, and other players as the Kings went on an unexpected run in the second quarter, taking control at 61-49 at the half.
However, the Tropa bounced back from that Ginebra shock, overcoming a 15-point deficit to come back in the game at 61-63 before cruising to an 81-79 victory going into the final canto.
And with Brownlee being attended by their personnel in the dugout in the fourth inning, the Tropang Giga is unstoppable.
A second-quarter push led by Standhardinger, Brownlee, and Pinto was punctuated by a 15-to-nothing roll from a 39-all count.
Standhardinger led with 18 points and 7 rebounds at the break, followed by Brownlee with 14 points and 4 boards and Pinto with 10 points, 2 rebounds, the same amount of assists and steals.
However, Hollis-Jefferson and his teammates demonstrated their own refusal to give up by beginning the third with a strong 14-2 run to tie the score at 63 all.
Erram, Hollis-Jefferson, and Castro combined for the game-winning bomb as TNT had a tenuous lead of 96-95 in the final four minutes. (SB)
