PBA Recap - Game Reports

In a thrilling Game 6 in PBA Recap Highlights, Mikey Williams delivered an explosive performance as TNT narrowly defeated Ginebra to secure the PBA Governors' Cup championship.

In an exciting finale at the Araneta Coliseum on Friday, April 21, Mikey Williams delivered a standout performance, leading TNT to their first-ever PBA Governors' Cup championship with a 97-93 victory over Barangay Ginebra in Game 6.

Williams showcased his scoring prowess, recording a season-high 38 points, including an impressive nine three-pointers. The Tropang Giga displayed their resilience by winning the last three games of the best-of-seven finals, preventing Barangay Ginebra from achieving a three-peat in the season-ending conference.

With the game hanging in the balance, the Filipino-American guard demonstrated composure and clutch shooting, sinking a crucial three-pointer with 1:15 minutes remaining, which ultimately secured the lead for TNT at 95-93. Import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson made significant contributions as well, adding 29 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals to seal the victory.

Hollis-Jefferson's late-game free throws solidified the win, allowing him to celebrate his first professional championship. The triumph marked a historic moment for TNT as they claimed the coveted PBA Governors' Cup title.

Led by PBA legend Jojo Lastimosa, the TNT Tropang Giga secured their ninth championship in franchise history, placing them on par with the renowned Toyota franchise as the sixth-most successful team in PBA history.

Lastimosa, in his first head coaching stint, earned his maiden PBA championship, having defeated his former mentor Tim Cone, who led Barangay Ginebra to four out of the last five Governors' Cup titles.

This defeat marked the first time that Ginebra, with the presence of Justin Brownlee, had lost a championship series, as they had previously maintained an undefeated record of 6-0 in the finals with the three-time Best Import.

Lastimosa expressed his deep honor, acknowledging the dominance of Brownlee and Cone in the Governors' Cup, recognizing their ownership of the tournament. He emphasized that for TNT to overcome them, they had to execute something truly remarkable.

TNT faced numerous challenges throughout the game, including a double-digit deficit in the first half and a spirited comeback attempt by Ginebra in the final quarter.

Ginebra's reigning MVP, Scottie Thompson, orchestrated a personal 9-0 scoring spree in the second quarter, leading his team to their largest lead of the game at 44-33. However, Mikey Williams ignited a surge for TNT with five three-pointers in the second period, accumulating 26 points in the first half alone. This remarkable performance allowed the Tropang Giga to close the gap, trailing by only three points at halftime, with a score of 48-51.

TNT took control in the third quarter, ending it with a 77-73 lead. They even extended their advantage to 84-77 with seven minutes remaining.

However, Ginebra refused to back down and launched a 16-8 run, ignited and concluded by dunks from Jamie Malonzo, to regain the lead at 93-92.

In a crucial moment, Mikey Williams, who earned the Finals MVP award, came to the rescue for the Tropang Giga. He banked in a three-pointer over Christian Standhardinger, disappointing the majority of the 13,588 Ginebra fans in attendance.

Williams' outstanding performance was timely, as he and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson were the only TNT players to score in double figures. Key contributors like Calvin Oftana and Jayson Castro were limited to just 6 points each on a combined 5-of-17 shooting.

According to coach Lastimosa, Mikey Williams was exceptional, emphasizing the team's reliance on his 38-point performance. Lastimosa acknowledged that without Williams' contributions, it would have been challenging for TNT to emerge victorious.

Despite suffering from food poisoning in the previous game, Justin Brownlee returned in fine form, tallying 29 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks. However, he missed crucial opportunities to tie the game late, committing a turnover and failing to convert a potential game-tying jumper in back-to-back possessions within the last 35 seconds.

Jamie Malonzo contributed 21 points and 6 rebounds for Ginebra in their loss. Scottie Thompson had an impressive all-around performance with 20 points, 9 assists, and 8 rebounds. Christian Standhardinger also made significant contributions with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists. Despite their efforts, Ginebra fell short in the game.
