The Batang Pier foiled the undermanned Tropang Giga.
PBA Recap Highlights NorthPort coach Bonnie Tan's desire for a pesky game from his young players finally materialized and yielded positive results as the Batang Pier triumphed over TNT, 99-90, during the PBA Recap On Tour held on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
In his inaugural start during the pre-season, Joshua Munzon thrived in his role, contributing 16 points and playing a crucial part in NorthPort's aggressive defense by recording three steals out of the team's overall 11 steals, with four of them occurring in the final quarter.
"We focused on continuously playing with increasing intensity and giving our all. I believe it became evident in the second half, as we managed to generate numerous steals and force turnovers," expressed the former top overall draft pick, who had been averaging just 2.5 points prior to the game.
"We remained committed to our game plan, and as a result, we secured the victory," Munzon added, disclosing the team's intentions moving forward in the pre-season, presented by Arena Plus and sponsored by Bingo Plus.
"Our goal is to seize every opportunity and strive for improvement. Every chance we have to compete is a chance to enhance our skills, and we aim to build upon that momentum heading into the regular season," Munzon stated.
"We simply aim to establish a strong foundation and hopefully generate momentum leading into that phase. Our objective is to enhance team chemistry and ignite our performance," expressed the players.
MJ Ayaay, JM Calma, and Fran Yu played pivotal roles in the Batang Pier's first victory out of three attempts, particularly during a decisive 15-2 run that erased an 84-88 deficit.
TNT started their pre-season without key players such as Jayson Castro, Mikey Williams, Calvin Oftana, Roger Pogoy, and Kelly Williams. Additionally, prospect JV Gallego did not see action.
Glenn Khobuntin, Carl Bryan Cruz, and Poy Erram effectively held the fort, while coach Sandy Arespacochaga, assuming coaching duties with head coach Jojo Lastimosa in the stands, provided playing time for former San Beda players Clifford Jopia, Damie Cuntapay, and Peter Alfaro.
For a considerable period, the strategy proved successful as the KaTropa led by as much as 38-28 and maintained control, taking a 69-65 lead into the final quarter.
However, the momentum had shifted significantly by that point, triggered by Erram's unfortunate knee injury before the midway mark of the third quarter, which deprived TNT of a crucial element in their game plan.
NorthPort wasted no time capitalizing on the opportunity, as Ayaay showcased his scoring prowess by contributing 11 out of his total of 15 points in the fourth quarter. Munzon also displayed his ability to penetrate the defense, scoring eight points of his own, leading the charge for the Batang Pier's impressive comeback.
