Reserve players step up as the Hotshots hold off a determined Road Warriors.
In the PBA Recap Highlights following Mark Barroca's clutch performance in Magnolia's previous victory over Converge, it's now the turn of the reserve players to take charge.
Despite the absence of Ian Sangalang and Calvin Abueva, substitute big men Jackson Corpuz and James Laput stepped up, combining for 37 points as the Hotshots secured their third consecutive win in the PBA on Tour, defeating NLEX with a score of 103-97 on Saturday night at the Baliwag Star Arena in Baliwag, Bulacan.
Corpuz, known for his defensive prowess, showcased his rarely seen offensive skills, contributing a game-high 19 points, including three successful three-pointers out of four attempts. He scored 12 of his total points in the third quarter, during which Magnolia took control of the game with a 30-14 exchange.
Laput, the 6-foot-10 prospect of Magnolia, continued to impress with another double-double performance, registering 18 points and 13 rebounds, earning him the player of the game recognition.
Additionally, second-string players Jerrick Ahanmisi (15 points, all from three-pointers) and Jed Mendoza (eight points) also made significant contributions in securing the team's third win.
Ahanmisi's fifth successful three-pointer extended Magnolia's lead to 91-78 with 6 minutes and 48 seconds remaining, while Mendoza's long-range shot with 12 seconds left effectively ended NLEX's late comeback attempt.
"Coach Chito (Victolero) is an excellent coach who really values his players. He recognizes the efforts we put in day in and day out and gives us opportunities," Laput praised.
In his debut for the Road Warriors, Ben Adamos, acquired via trade from Phoenix, immediately made an impact by scoring 18 points, including four three-pointers on a 4-of-5 shooting performance. The game was presented by Arena Plus and sponsored by Bingo Plus.
Unfortunately for NLEX, they couldn't break their winless streak in the pre-season tournament, falling to 0-3.
The Hotshots started strong, establishing a 26-16 lead, but the Road Warriors responded with three consecutive three-pointers, narrowing the gap to just one point by the end of the first quarter.
Under Frankie Lim's guidance, NLEX continued their strong performance in the second quarter, outscoring Magnolia 28-19, resulting in a 53-45 lead at halftime.
However, a surge led by Corpuz in the third quarter allowed the Hotshots to regain control with a 75-67 advantage, which they held on to for the remainder of the game.
Quarter scores: 26-25, 45-53, 75-67, 103-97.
