Meralco's starting lineup performs effectively, fending off Converge. PBA Recap Highlights, Meralco displayed resilience in the face of relentless pressure from Converge, securing a hard-fought 96-88 victory in the PBA On Tour on Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Allein Maliksi led the team with 16 points, while Anjo Caram, Cliff Hodge, and Raymond Almazan made crucial plays down the stretch to overcome the tough challenge posed by the FiberXers.
Caram's standout performance included a pivotal three-point shot that ignited Meralco's surge, turning the tide from an 85-84 deficit and leading them to a significant bounce-back win following a 93-100 loss to Phoenix Super LPG last week. With this victory, Meralco improved their record to 2-1 in the preseason tournament, presented by Arena Plus and sponsored by Bingo Plus.
Hodge contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds, Almazan recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Alvin Pasaol added 10 points. The entire starting lineup, under the guidance of coach Luigi Trillo, scored in double figures.
"Being a professional, I just need to do my job... especially now that we're learning a new system. Our top players were absent, so we really need to work together to secure the win," summarized Caram, speaking on behalf of his teammates.
"In my personal mindset, it's always about being ready. Whether I'm given five minutes or 20 minutes on the court, I just focus and do my job. I strive to make the right plays and give my all," added Caram.
Meralco's determination was evident in the fourth quarter, where they limited Converge to a mere 4-of-21 shooting from the field. Despite this, the FiberXers managed to narrow the gap by taking advantage of the Bolts' early fouls and converting eight of their 12 free throw attempts.
"We wanted to maintain a fast pace because we focused on our defensive stops. When we get those stops, we can get easy shots in transition," explained Caram, referring to Meralco's strong start of 16-2, only to face adversity when the FiberXers fought back and even took a 78-72 lead.
"They were able to catch up when we couldn't make defensive stops and couldn't get our offense going," Caram acknowledged. "In the fourth quarter, we made a concerted effort to get stops so that we could push the ball and get into our offensive flow."
Despite sustaining a bloodied nose from a collision with Caram in the second quarter, Jeron Teng displayed resilience and contributed 21 points to lead Converge. Justin Arana also made an impact with 12 points and 15 rebounds for the team.
Barkley Ebona, who ignited the FiberXers' initial comeback, contributed 12 points along with Kevon Racal, while Alec Stockton came close to a triple-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists. Despite their efforts, the team suffered their second consecutive loss, bringing their record to 1-2.
However, the victory came at a price for Meralco, as Norbert Torres was forced to leave the game due to a back injury following a rebounding battle with Arana in the latter half of the third quarter. The experienced frontliner managed to score nine points before exiting the game.
