PBA Recap Tolentino steps up to the challenge as NorthPort dominates Blackwater.
In his debut PBA On Tour game, ARVIN Tolentino quickly made his presence felt, securing NorthPort's comprehensive 112-95 triumph over Blackwater at the Ynares Arena in Pasig City. Tolentino's impact was immediate, as he contributed 18 of his impressive 22 points in the second half. Moreover, his performance helped the Batang Pier regain their composure after their commanding 18-point advantage was reduced to a mere eight points during the third quarter.
Tolentino was subbed out for the remainder of the game with 5:45 left on the clock, but he left a lasting impact with his final contribution—a crucial three-pointer that extended NorthPort's lead to 96-70. This shot played a significant role in securing their second consecutive victory, evening their pre-season tune-up record to 2-2, presented by Arena Plus and sponsored by Bingo Plus.
"Fortunately, we were able to bounce back in the second half," remarked Tolentino, who recently became a father to his first daughter Sophia, adding to his gold medal from the Cambodia SEA Games.
While Tolentino played a vital role, the game was not solely influenced by his performance. Joshua Munzon, Paul Zamar, JM Calma, and Paolo Taha also delivered impressive double-digit contributions, further bolstering NorthPort's follow-up performance to their 99-90 win over TNT last week.
Munzon showcased his exceptional performance as a starter for the second consecutive game, concluding with an impressive 19 points. Meanwhile, Zamar contributed 17 points, with 13 of them coming in the first half, which propelled the Batang Pier to a 42-38 lead at halftime.
In the absence of the injured Prince Caperal and Jon Gabriel, Calma took charge of the center position and finished with 16 points, while Taha contributed 11 points to the team's victory.
For Blackwater, Troy Rosario led the scoring with 17 points. The team had hoped to build on their 100-94 victory over Terrafirma the previous week but instead found themselves tied with NorthPort and San Miguel Beer in the standings.
RK Ilagan made a valuable contribution with 15 points, and Tyrus Hill provided a significant impact off the bench with 12 points and seven rebounds. Baser Amer and Rashawn McCarthy each added 11 points for the Bossing.
Similar to Tolentino, Rosario had a slow start in the first half, scoring only four points. However, he came alive in the third quarter, scoring 11 points and leading the Bossing's rally, which narrowed the deficit from 42-60 to 57-65.
After Tolentino assisted Calma for a basket and Munzon made a free throw, Tolentino took charge by sinking three consecutive three-pointers, widening NorthPort's lead to 85-69 as they entered the final quarter.
Furthermore, it was Tolentino who spearheaded the Batang Pier's crucial 8-0 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter. He scored a couple of baskets, drew fouls from Rosario resulting in technical free throws, and nailed his fourth and final three-pointer of the game. This impressive sequence created a significant 26-point gap, making it 96-70 in favor of NorthPort.
