After losing to the DLSU Green Archers 83-92 in the 16th FilOil-EcoOil Pre-Season Cup on Saturday, May 20, at the FilOil-EcoOil Centre in San Juan, the UP Fighting Maroons lost their next two games.
The Fighting Maroons operated like a well-oiled machine in the first quarter, gaining an early lead of 15-5 despite continuing to play without starting guard JD Cagulangan.
They persisted in their offensive strategy in the second quarter, going on a 12-2 run midway through.
The Diliman-based team appeared to have an advantage, but the Green Archers, under the leadership of Earl Abadam and Evan Nelle, rallied back, contributing 11 of DLSU's 23 points in the second quarter to cut the deficit to one, 41-40.
The Fighting Maroons responded with their own run and led 49-42 at the break.
Kevin Quiambao and Michael Phillips, though, stepped up for the Archers in the second half, helping them take the lead midway through the third quarter. They never returned it.
With a game-high 23 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and a block, returning center Malick Diouf led UP. No other Fighting Maroon scored in the double digits, with Cyril Gonzales and CJ Cansino, the next highest scorers, scoring just 9 and 8 points, respectively.
On Wednesday, May 24, at 4 PM, the UP Fighting Maroons will play host to the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the 16th FilOil-EcoOil Pre-Season Cup. But first, on May 21 at 2:30 PM, they will play the Enderun Titans in the PinoyLiga Collegiate Cup at the EAC Sports and Cultural Center.
