Choco Mucho Starts Strong in VTV Cup 2023, Defeating Japan's Kansai Team
Choco Mucho kicked off its participation in the VTV Cup 2023 International women's volleyball tournament with a triumphant 25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22 victory against Japan's Kansai University in Lao Cai, Vietnam. The Flying Titans dominated the first two sets, yet faced a setback in the third set, where a six-point loss allowed the Japanese team to prolong the match. The Philippine squad swiftly regrouped in the fourth set, as Caitlin Viray's contribution pushed them to the brink of victory at 23-20. However, Kansai managed to narrow the gap to just one point through two consecutive scores. In a clutch move, Viray secured a match point for Choco Mucho with a crucial attack at 24-22, followed by Maddie Madayag's game-winning block became the VTV Cup 2023 Highlights.
Spearheaded by Sisi Rondina and Des Cheng, the Flying Titans showcased an impressive performance, with setter Deanna Wong orchestrating the team's plays. Madayag and Cherry Nunag held their ground at the frontline, while liberos Thang Ponce and Denden Lazaro-Revilla ensured strong defensive coverage.
Kat Tolentino, coming off the bench, made a crucial impact by contributing three consecutive points late in the second set.
"We're thrilled with the win. It was a team effort, and we're eager to learn from facing other teams," Tolentino said post-game. "Patience was key against a strong Japan team. We stayed focused and believed in our ability to catch up, even when they led."
Tolentino also praised the welcoming and supportive crowd.
Next, the Premier Volleyball League club faces Vietnam's Team 1, led by national stars Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and Doan Thi Lam Oanh.
Coach Dante Alinsunurin's squad seeks to glean valuable lessons from international opponents to improve on their previous seventh-place finish.
In the VTV Cup, the top two teams proceed to the championship game, the third and fourth-ranked teams vie for bronze, and the bottom two compete in a classification match.
